The more complicated, compact and powerful the diagnosed equipment is, the more complicated it is to determine the actual reason, that can lead to breakdown, accident or catastrophe, and the more experienced critical equipment diagnostician is needed.

Having examined the acoustic emission parameters let’s analyze acoustic emission signal sources in the ultrasonic range generated by an operating bearing.

The main acoustic emission signal shaping sources in an ultrasonic frequency range are:

  • Elastic waves from normal and tangential stress contact patches in object near-surface layers and races at rotation from acting loads;
  • Microblows due to objects and races surface roughness, which intensify because of lubricant destruction;
  • Hydrodynamic effects from lubricant in the contact stress area of rolling elements and races;
  • Pulse signals from crack formation in rolling elements metal;
  • Microblows and blows from rolling of defective surfaces (flaking, chips, etc.);
  • Microdisplacements of the outer race in the bearing housing;
  • Bearing seat wear, accompanied by sliding shifting of mounting sleeves relative to seats;
  • Microslippage of rotary bodies onto races.
